WILMINGTON, MA — At its meeting on Monday night, the Wilmington Board of Selectmen recognized and honored the players and coaches of Wilmington Youth Hockey’s Pee Wee 1 team and Bantam 1 team, both of which recently won state championships.
“We are incredibly proud of you,” Selectman Chair Mike Champoux told the players. “We say ‘thank you’ for being great representatives for our great town.”
“You brought a lot of pride to the 01887,” Selectwoman Judy O’Connell said to the teams. “You look great in your jerseys and championship hats… Remember these moments. Remember these friendships. These are the best times of your lives.”
O’Connell also complimented the coaches, calling them “the role models we need in athletics.”
O’Connell then praised the players’ parents.
“Hockey brings families together like no other sport… It takes a village to get this done. Hockey is a very expensive sport. A very time-consuming sport. But a very rewarding sport. The kids couldn’t have done what they did without your support.”
Selectman Mike McCoy congratulated the players, parents and coaches. He joked the teams should have dyed their hair blonde, like the WHS Boys Hockey championship teams, so the Selectmen could have wore blonde wigs in solidarity, like they did in 2012 and 2013.
“Congratulations on a great season and outstanding performance,” Selectman Kevin Caira told the kids. “Hockey in Wilmington is a great tradition.”
“You’ll eventually be moving up to the high school level and beyond. When you become a pro, I hope you remember this day and sign a puck for me,” joked Caira.
“Congratulations to both teams — the young men, women, coaches and parents,” said Selectman Greg Bendel. “You should be proud of yourself. We’re proud of you.”
Bendel then took the opportunity to wish Pee Wee goalie Sam Cedrone a happy birthday.
Each player and coach was called forward by Town Manager Jeff Hull and received a citation from Selectmen Chair Mike Champoux.
