WILMINGTON, MA — The Wilmington Fire Department is featured in the latest episode of NESN’s Behind The B TV show. The episode first aired on Monday, March 28. This follows a previous appearance on the March 14 episode.
The show highlighted the Wilmington Fire Department’s participation in the 2nd Annual Firefighters Stair Climb in New York on Sunday, March 13.
Seven Wilmington firefighters joined 336 firefighters from across the country to ascend the 72 floors of 4 World Trade Center in full firefighting gear. Each firefighter climbed in honor of one of the 343 FDNY firefighters killed on September 11th.
John Whitesides, the Boston Bruins Strength & Conditioning Coach, was on hand to show support for the Wilmington crew.
“During the lockout in ’04, I got a chance to work with the Wilmington Fire Department. They brought me in and I felt like I was a part of their team. I’ve got to know these guys and I’ve kept friendships with them ever since,” said Whitesides.
Wilmington Firefighter Captain Chuck Taylor carried a special Garnet “Ace” Bailey Bruins jersey on the climb with him. The jersey was given to Taylor by the team.
Bailey, who played for the Bruins in the 60’s and 70’s, was a victim of the September 11th terrorist attacks.
“It’s really impressive that these guys are going to carry about 50 lbs up 72 floors today,” added Whitesides. “I’d like to see a few our [Bruins players] do it. I think it would be a really difficult task.”
