WILMINGTON, MA — At Monday’s Wilmington Board of Selectmen Meeting, Town Manager Jeff Hull shared a letter from the Middlesex Canal Commission regarding their position on the Town Dog Park, to be located at Town Park (823 Main Street).
As Wilmington Apple reported earlier this month, the Town temporarily ceased work on the Dog Park so the Middlesex Canal Commission could review the project’s plans and offer comments.
While Commission members wished they were alerted to the Dog Park project during its planning stages, they recognize that work has already begun and now request the town make “significant improvements” to the project, which is located in close proximity to the Canal and trail.
Improvements include:
- The existing trail to the canal be cleared of brush and a ten foot path be maintained
- The area around the kiosk be cleared and maintained, plus a trash barrel be placed in in close proximity to the kiosk to encourage use by those using the dog park and/or trail
- Barrels be placed within each fenced-in area, which should be emptied on a regular basis
- Dog doo litter bags be kept supplied for use by dog owners using the park
- Signs be placed to discourage littering and encourage carry in/carry out
- A nice sign be placed, easily visible, at the street entrance to the parking lot, identifying both the Wilmington Town Park and Middlesex Canal State Heritage Trail
Town Manager Hull noted that all requested improvements would be “taken under advisement,” noting some will already be achieved under the original project.
Work on the Dog Park has resumed. According to public bid documents, the fences and gates should be installed no later than June 1.
