PHOTO OF THE DAY: WHS Girls Track Coach Brian Schell Receives Honor

WILMINGTON, MA — At Wednesday night’s Wilmington School Committee Meeting, WHS Girls Track Coach Brian Schell received a certificate of commendation from the board.

Schell was recently named Boston Globe‘s Girls Track Coach of the Year for Division 4 after his team went undefeated and captured the very first Middlesex League Championship in program history.

“We so very much appreciate your efforts,” said School Committee Chair Peggy Kane.  “These students are better for having had you as their coach.”

“They’re all amazing kids,” responded Schell.  “They truly are student athletes — some of the smartest kids in school…  They work hard both in the classroom and on the track.  They give amazing effort.”

Schell noted that just today, WHS track members Julia Gake and Samantha Pitzi were being recognized at the “Massachusetts Celebration of Girls and Women in Sports Day” celebration at Fanueil Hall.  Both are not only Middlesex League All-Stars, but also ranked in the top 20 of their class.

“This [certificate] means a lot to me,” said Schell, a Wilmington High School graduate.  “It was good to bring a championship to Wilmington… and there’s hopefully more to come.”
