WILMINGTON, MA — At Wednesday night’s School Committee Meeting, Superintendent Mary DeLai announced she has selected Timothy Alberts to become Wilmington High’s next Director of Athletics, Physical Education, and Health.
Alberts, currently the Director of Athletics and Physical Education for Matignon High School in Cambridge, was offered the position on Tuesday evening and accepted on Wednesday morning.
Pending successful contract negotiations, which DeLai hopes to complete no later than April 1, Alberts would take the reigns from retiring Athletic Director Ed Harrison on July 1.
Alberts edged out fellow finalist Ryan Quiqley, who currently serves as the Assistant Principal of Medway Middle School and previous served as the Athletic Director for Ashland High School.
“Both candidates were very capable, but [Alberts] was the ‘best fit’ for Wilmington,” DeLai told Wilmington Apple after the meeting.
DeLai said the decision to hire Alberts, who lives “right down the road” in Reading, was based primarily on the feedback received from students, parents and coaches given at last Thursday’s forums.
The Wilmington Town Crier detailed Alberts’ professional and educational background in last week’s edition, noting that prior to serving as Matignon AD for the last three years, he coached soccer and lacrosse at BC High and served as the school’s Director of Alumni Relations. While at Matignon, he has received the MIAA Ted Damko Award, given to a new athletic administrator who makes “significant contributions to the league, district and state.” Read this week’s Crier for additional coverage of Alberts, including his performance in last week’s forums.
