WILMINGTON, MA — At its meeting on Wednesday night, the Wilmington School Committee — on the enthusiastic recommendation of Superintendent Mary DeLai — unanimously appointed Jen Mahon to the newly created role of “Director of Student Services.”
The new Director of Student Services position will replace the current Director of Special Education position, now held by Mary Houde, who is retiring at the end of this school year.
“This new role will bring all student services (e.g., Health Services, Special Education, ELL, etc.) together under one individual’s guidance and leadership,” explained Superintendent DeLai.
The position was posted internally and Mahon was the most qualified and enthusiastic candidate to apply.
“I am so grateful that [Jen] is willing to step into this role and take on the leadership of very important set of responsibilities for Wilmington Public Schools,” said DeLai.
Mahon has been with the Wilmington school system since 2006, serving in a variety of roles. She currently serves as the Director of the Boutwell Early Childhood Center. Mahon has previously worked as Special Education classroom teacher at both the early childhood and intermediate grade levels, and has experience as a Special Education Team Chairperson.
“I’m excited. I’m really, really excited,” Mahon told the School Committee after the vote. “I want to thank all of you and Mrs. DeLai for your support and the opportunity to do some really great things for our students in Wilmington Public Schools.”
Several of Mahon’s colleagues were in the audience to show their support, as was her husband and (well-behaved, adorable) children.
Mahon will begin her new position effective July 1 and serve on an interim basis for one year.
