SCHOOL COMMITTEE NEWS: Big Issues To Be Discussed At Tonight’s Meeting

WILMINGTON, MA — The Wilmington School Committee meets this Wednesday, March 9 at 7pm in the Large Instruction Room at Wilmington High School.  (The Committee has an Executive Session meeting scheduled for 6:30pm.  It typically reconvenes back into public session around 7pm.)

There are some newsworthy items on the agenda, including:

  • A “joint statement” — presumably between Superintendent Mary DeLai and the School Committee — will be issued around the topic of establishing a later start time for Wilmington High School.
  • The School Committee will receive presentations on several elementary curriculum programs, including Fundations (reading/spelling) and Envisions 2.0 (mathematics).
  • Superintendent Mary DeLai will announce her appointment to the position of “Director of Student Services,” which appears to be either a new or renamed position.
  • The School Committee will vote on whether or not to participate in the state’s school choice program for the 2016-2017 school year.  In recent history, Wilmington has not.
  • The School Committee will receive a report from the special education collaborative Wilmington belongs to — the SEEM Collaborative.
  • The School Committee will discuss  supporting a resolution calling for full funding of the Massachusetts Foundation Budget Review Commission’s recommendations. Read a resolution, that several School Committees across the state have recently adopted,HERE.

In addition:

  • Superintendent Mary DeLai will present her bi-weekly report to the Committee.
  • School Committee Student Representative Dina Singh is scheduled to give her monthly report to the Committee.

The meeting will be telecast live by Wilmington Community Television on WCTV-G — Channel 22 on Comcast and Channel 39 on Verizon.  The meeting will also streamed on WCTV’s website HERE.
