WILMINGTON, MA – World Vision is celebrating its 25th anniversary of the 30-Hour Famine this year.
Wilmington United Methodist Church has had a relationship with World Vision since 1996 and has been participating in the Famine since 2003. This year, WUMC’s Youth Group will be joined by kids from North Reading’s Aldersgate UMC, Reading‘s Old South UMC, Boston’s Union UMC, Arlington’s Calvary UMC, as well as Southport, ME’s Southport UMC and other friends.
Each year, as part of the Famine, a representative item is collected to illustrate the number of children still impacted by hunger. This year the WUMC youth are collecting ramen noodles. We intend to collect 8,000 servings of ramen noodles, not only to be a visual aid, but to be donated to local feeding programs and food pantries.
During our March 12-13, 2016 event, the Youth of WUMC and our attending friends will fast for 30 hours, work in our community and neighboring area in shelters, soup kitchens, food pantries, nursing homes, as well as material support centers like the Lowell Wish Project, IMEC America, Habitat for Humanity and even the Stone Zoo.
Our Youth not only want to see the impact but make a greater impact. Each youth participant has pledged to raise $425.00–enough to feed a child for a year.
Any contributions toward the goal of ramen may be left at the Wilmington United Methodist Church (87 Church Street) any day until March 12. Any financial support to help save lives may be sent to Wilmington UMC in the form of check made payable to World Vision or to the WUMC 30 Hour Famine.
When the 30 Hour Famine began in 1991, 40,000 children under the age of five were dying every day due to hunger and its related issues. Today, that number has been reduced drastically to 8,000 a day. While it is a significant reduction, it is still a number too high to be acceptable.
