Major General Whittington To Talk Leadership With Austin Prep Students

READING, MA – Major General Charles W. Whittington, Jr., the Deputy Commanding General of Operations in the U.S. First Army, will speak to students and parents at Austin Preparatory School next month.

The topic of his visit will be the importance of leadership, which is the theme of Austin Prep’s advisory program this year. Maj. Gen. Whittington is responsible for assisting with the training, readiness and mobilization of all Army National Guard and Army Reserve units across the United States and two U.S. territories. He will share his experiences about leadership with students on Tuesday, March 1.

His visit is part of the school’s St. Augustine Lecture Series. Named for Austin Prep’s patron, the series is designed to enrich the intellectual life of the school community by exposing students to accomplished individuals who share their experiences and lessons learned in life.

Maj. Gen. Whittington is a career field officer, with 30 years of military service. His awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star Medal, and the Meritorious Service Medal with three Oak Leave Clusters, the Army Commendation Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, the Army Achievement Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters, Southwest Asian Service Medal with Campaign Stars, the Iraqi Campaign Medal and the Parachutist Badge.

He and Austin Prep’s Headmaster, Dr. James Hickey, are members of Tau Kappa Epsilon International Fraternity, one of the largest college fraternities in North America. Nearly 300,000 men have been initiated since 1899, including Ronald Reagan, 40th president of the United States, and Danny Thomas, founder of St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
