BREAKING: School Committee’s Kathleen Carroll Will NOT Seek Re-Election In April

WILMINGTON, MA — Wilmington School Committee member Kathleen Carroll tells Wilmington Apple she has decided not to seek re-election when her term expires this April.

The decision by Carroll, a 2-term incumbent who was first elected to the School Committee in 2010, now guarantees at least one new face will be joining the board this spring.

As things stand now, there are just three candidates running for three seats.  Carroll’s colleagues, longtime Chair Margaret “Peggy” Kane and Julie Broussard, have both opted to seek re-election.  Political newcomer Thomas Talbot, who has a 2nd grader in the school system, hopes to join the committee.

All three candidates have already pulled and returned the necessary nomination papers to the Town Clerk’s Office.  Each of their papers have been certified and all three will appear on the ballot.  If no other candidate steps forward before the March 3 filing deadline, Kane, Broussard and Talbot will face an uncontested election.

A Grateful Carroll

“I will miss being a part of the big discussions,” Carroll told Wilmington Apple.  “I will miss hearing what’s going on and giving my input.”

Carroll, who volunteered on many School Committee subcommittees and previously served as the Committee’s Vice Chair, is most proud of her policy work — helping create and update policies for the schools, one of the Committee’s biggest responsibilities.

Carroll, who has three children in the school system and works as a lunch lady at the Middle School, promises to stay involved in the school system.

“I am not ready to stop giving back to this community,” she noted, pointing to her involvement with the Wilmington Educational Foundation as something she’d like to continue when she’s finished in office.

“I want to thank everyone who supported me over the last six years,” said Carroll. “I hope I made a difference… I tried to represent the community the best I could.”
