WILMINGTON, MA — Following the denial of our application to include a carnival as part of the annual Fun on the Fourth Celebration, the members of the 4th of July Committee met to discuss options for 2016 and beyond.
For the past three years, we have been challenged to present a Celebration that differed in many respects from past Celebrations. These challenges have greatly impacted the financial resources that we have available as our events are underwritten by donations and contributions from the carnival.
With that said, in the weeks to come, we will be working with the participating community groups and Town officials in the hopes of presenting a Celebration on Friday July 1st and Saturday July 2nd with fireworks on Saturday evening. As we have in the past, we will rely on the generosity of donors and sponsors to present this Celebration to the community.
Prior to this decision, our discussions included the possibility of appealing the denial to the court system. As much as we disagree with the denial and believe that the basis of that denial is unsupportable, none of us joined the Committee to dedicate our time to litigation. As a Committee, therefore, we have concluded that our focus is better dedicated to remaining where it has been for more than three decades – to presenting a fun, family, community event for the residents of Wilmington.
At the same time, in light of the events of the past three years, we believe that it is time for the approval process to be reevaluated and for that reevaluation to be placed in the hands of residents at Town Meeting.
With the application process behind us, we look forward to focusing our efforts on continuing this Wilmington tradition for a 36th year.
