Berta was born on September 22, 1931 in Munich, Germany; she was the beloved daughter of the late Johan and Anna (Wimmer) Kampfl. Berta was raised and educated in Germany and it was during the Korean War that Berta met a handsome young American Air Force Veteran Alvan Marshall while he was stationed in Germany. Berta and Alvan married on July 12, 1953, celebrating nearly 58 years of marriage before his passing in May of 2011.
During Alvan’s 22-year career in the Air Force he and Berta lived all over the United States and Europe before he retired in 1969 and the family made their home in Wilmington in 1970.
Berta loved her family unconditionally and her devotion to them was evident in everything she did. Berta was a wonderful homemaker, she took pride in her home and was known for her “love” of cleaning. Berta was also an amazing cook who enjoyed making favorite dishes for each and every one of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren; there wasn’t anything Berta wouldn’t do for her family.
Prior to retiring in 1996, Berta worked as an assembler for the Compugraphic/AGFA Company in Wilmington for many years. Berta’s wonderful personality and great work ethic made her a favorite amongst her co-workers.
Berta will be fondly remembered as a kind lady who enjoyed going out to dinner and spending time with her family and friends especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Berta will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Berta was the beloved wife of the late Alvan Marshall, devoted mother of Linda Whelton of Latham, NY and David Marshall & his wife Lynne of Wilmington, loving “Grammy” of Amy Whelton & her husband Peter Lasaga of Hoboken, NJ, Hannah Marshall and Shawn Marshall both of Wilmington, and “Great-Grammy” to Charlotte and Ethan Lasaga. Berta is also survived by her wonderful family in Germany as well as her nieces, nephews, and friends.
