Woburn Street School Students Are “Movin’ in The Morning”

WILMINGTON, MA — Below is a letter recently sent to Woburn Street School parents. I’m passing it along to the larger community at the request of several parents who are enthusiastic about the program.

“The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recommends that children should be physically active a minimum of 60 minutes per day.  There is a growing body of research focused on the association between regular physical activity and improved academic performance among school-aged youth.

This past week we implemented a new program here at the Woburn Street that we call “Movin’ in the Morning.”  Each morning, after the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance, we read a “Healthy Tip of the Day,” followed by about 2 minutes of fun physical activity done to a musical accompaniment.

Each day we do a different physical activity:

  • Marching Mondays — “It’s A Small World”
  • Twisting Tuesdays — “Let’s Do The Twist”
  • Walking Wednesdays – “Walking on Sunshine”
  • Shake It Thursdays — “Shake It Off”
  • Jumping Jack Fridays — “Happy”

We look forward to offering the children other opportunities for physical activity breaks throughout the year!”
