OBITUARY: Albert G. Gilson, 76

WILMINGTON, MA — Albert G. Gilson, age 76, of Wilmington, died peacefully on February 7, 2016, at the Aberjona Nursing Center in Winchester following a brief illness.

Albert was born in Lowell, MA, on August 3, 1939; he was the dear son of Herbert E. and Mary (Brennan) Gilson. Albert was raised and educated in Charlestown, MA; he was a member of a large and loving family. Albert graduated from Charlestown High School with the Class of 1956?

On July 19, 1958, Albert enlisted in the United States Marine Corp. during the Vietnam War. Albert received several medals and commendations for his fine service to the Country and was honorably discharged as a Lance Corporal in March of 1962. Albert went on to serve in the Marine Reserves until July of 1964 but even after his obligation was complete he continued to be involved with the Marine Corps. until the time of his passing. Albert attended many Marine events throughout the years and kept in touch with numerous fellow Veterans; Albert was very proud to serve and protect the United States and his fellow man. Semper Fi.

Albert married his “sweetheart” Lucille Enos in 1965; the couple lived in Somerville for a short time before moving to Wilmington in 1967 where they raised “their boys” Phil, Steve, and Tom. Albert loved his family dearly and enjoyed the times spent together. Albert cherished his role as “Grandpa” and “Papa G” to his grandchildren Ashlyn, Gianna, Nicholas, and Isabelle; he could almost act like a kid again around them, he was goofy, funny, and loved talking to them on the phone for hours about nature.

Prior to retiring, Albert worked as an installer and service mechanic for the refrigeration and air conditioning units at Harvard University in Cambridge. Albert’s knowledge of the systems and great work ethic made him a valuable employee for many years.

In his spare time Albert enjoyed hunting, fishing, and “hanging out” with his family, extended family, and friends. Albert will be fondly remembered for his witty personality and great smile; he will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Albert was the beloved husband of Lucille C. (Enos) Gilson, devoted father of Phillip Gilson & his wife Heidi of Tyngsborough, Stephen Gilson & his wife Chanhsamone of Hudson, NH, and Thomas Gilson of Lowell. Loving “Grandpa” of Ashlyn, Nicholas, Isabelle and “Papa G” to Gianna. Cherished son of the late Herbert and Mary (Brennan) Gilson. Dear brother of Patricia “Patsy” Manson, Mary Lou Leary & husband Ed and Linda Brassil & husband Fred all of Wilmington,Virginia “Chickie” Goggin & Husband John of Charlestown, Judy Gavin of Brighton, the late Elinor “Midge” Mehigan, Robert Gilson, and Herbert “Sonny” Gilson. Brother-in-law of Dan Mehigan of Charlestown, Paula Gilson of New Market, NH, Jean Gilson and Albert Gallarelli both of Wilmington, Carolyn Deal of Stoneham, the late David Manson, and Richard Gavin. Albert is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Family and friends will gather at the Nichols Funeral Home, 187 Middlesex Ave. (Rte. 62), Wilmington, on Saturday, February 13th at 10:00 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Thomas of Villanova Church, 126 Middlesex Ave., Wilmington at 11:00 a.m. Interment with Military Honors will follow in Wildwood Cemetery, Wilmington. Visiting Hours will be held at the Funeral Home on Friday, February 12th from 4:00-7:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers donation in Albert’s memory may be made to a Veteran’s Charity of your Choice.
