Friends of Mr. Kelley,
Many WHS alumni have gone into mathematics teaching or some other mathematical field, inspired by our high school experiences with Mr. Kelley. One way to celebrate those experiences is to host a collection of talks at the fall meeting of the Association of Teachers of Mathematics in New England (ATMNE) to be held on October 20 & 21, 2016, at the Radisson Hotel in Manchester, NH.
I contacted the organizers with this idea, and they think it’s wonderful—a fitting tribute to a great man. Talks could be about anything—what you do now with mathematics, stories about mathematics at WHS, how your teaching (if you teach) is influenced by the “Kelley method,” some piece of mathematics you remember from his classes (Kathy remembers his proof that the square root of 2 is irrational), or even about how he brought his approach to teaching to his coaching.
Details about the conference can be found HERE.
A proposal for a talk can be submitted HERE.
The deadline for submission is Monday, February 8. If you decide to do this, please include something about Mr. Kelley in your description. Here’s what I submitted as the first line: “This talk is dedicated to the memory of Frank Kelley.”
And please let me know if you submit something (acuoco@edc.org) so I can keep a list for the organizers.
Thanks so much for considering this. Mr. Kelley would have had a good laugh, sitting through talks given by his former students.
