Wilmington High Announces “Poetry Out Loud” School-Wide Contest

WILMINGTON, MA — On Thursday, February 4, 2016 at 9:10am, many grade 9-12 students from WHS who won their classroom contest will participate in the Poetry Out Loud school wide contest in the WHS auditorium. The winner of this competition will advance to the state Poetry Out Loud contest. The state champion will advance to the Poetry Out Loud National Finals on May 3-4, 2016 in Washington, DC, where $50,000 in awards and school stipends will be distributed.

The competition, presented in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Poetry Foundation, is part of a national program that encourages high school students to learn about great poetry through memorization, performance, and competition. Over the past 10 years, Poetry Out Loud has reached nearly 3 million students, more than 9,500 schools, and thousands of teachers across the country.

Judges for Wilmington’s Poetry Out Loud contest include: Marie Cahalane (Guidance Curriculum Team Leader), Christopher Phillips (Assistant Principal), Kate Millerick (Library and Media Specialist), Peggy Kane (School Committee Chair), Brittany Tuttle (Wilmington Memorial Library’s Teen Services Librarian), and Deven Langenfeld (Senior Class President and Master of Ceremonies).

The event was organized by several WHS English teachers, including Cathy Daley, Lisa Desberg, Maureen Dolan, Meghan Estrada & Mia Parviainen.
