WILMINGTON, MA — “Wilmington has a history of lighting up the Common for great causes,” Selectman Lou Cimaglia noted at last night’s Selectmen’s Meeting.
In April, the Town Common lights were turned blue in observance of Autism Awareness Month and Autism Speak’s “Light It Up Blue” campaign.
In May, the Town Common lights were turned purple in recognition of Relay For Life Awareness Month and American Cancer Society’s “Paint The Town Purple” campaign.
In October, the Town Common lights were turned pink for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
And, in December, the Town Common lights will be turned green as part of the “Greenlight A Vet” campaign.
The request to illuminate the Town Common green next month was made by resident Fred Hogan and approved by Selectmen last night.
The purpose of the campaign, according to its website, is:
Change one light to green in a visible location-on your porch, in your home, or at your office-and keep it glowing every day as a symbol of appreciation and support for our veterans. Then, share your support by taking a picture of your green light and posting it using the hashtag #greenlightavet.
The campaign, organized by Walmart, chose green because it is the color of hope, renewal and well-being.
“It’s a simple way for people to thank veterans for their services,” explains Selectman and Veterans Agent Lou Cimaglia.
Cimaglia noted that necessary lenses to change the Town Common lights green will be donated to the town by Hogan, the Wilmington Sons of Italy and others.
