WILMINGTON, MA — It’s official. Wilmington High School baseball standout Jackson “Jack” Gillis signed his letter of intent to play for Vanderbilt University next year. The WHS senior put pen to paper at a ceremony on Monday afternoon, after verbally committing to the Commodores back in June.
In a post on Instagram earlier this week, Gills announced: “Blessed to say that I’m officially signed to Vanderbilt University to play baseball. Thank you to all my family, friends, and coaches for sticking by me since day one, and always believing in me since the start! This is only the beginning. Anchor down.”
Vanderbilt University is arguably the country’s best college baseball program, winning the College World Series in 2014 and finishing runner-up in 2015.
Gillis is an absolute stud. The 6’3, 225 pound left-handed pitcher struck out 102 batters in 57 1/3 innings in 2014 and 69 batters in 39 2/3 innings in 2015 for the Wildcats. He won his division’s MVP Award and has received various honors from the Boston Globe, Boston Herald, Lowell Sun, ESPN.com Boston, and others.
According to Prep Baseball Report, Gillis was a highly coveted recruit, receiving interest from Boston College, Clemson, Penn State, UNC, Vanderbilt, and Wake Forest, among others.
According to the Boston Herald, Gillis is “widely considered as the premier pitcher in the Class of 2016 from this area.”
Wilmington Town Crier Editor Jamie Pote has reported extensively on Gillis’s recruitment journey HERE and HERE. Look for more from Pote in this week’s Crier.
