QUESTION OF THE DAY: Your Feelings On Huge Gun Show Coming To Wilmington This Weekend?

Here’s Wilmington Apple’s Question of the Day for November 10: What are your thoughts on a huge gun show coming to Wilmington this weekend?

As Wilmington Apple reported yesterday, a large firearm and knife show/sale, featuring 500 tables, will be held at the Shriners Auditorium this Saturday, November 14, 9am to 5pm, and Sunday, November 15, 9am to 3pm. Participants can buy, sell and trade sports, antique, and collectible firearms; custom and high quality knives; and various militaria. The event is hosted by New Mart Promotions of Massachusetts and promoted by the NRA-affiliated Westchester Collectors Club.

When posted in the WHEN [Wilmington Events, Happenings & News] Facebook page, several residents were not pleased such an event was happening in town.  Comments included:

  • “So sorry this is happening in our town.”
  • “It’s completely unnecessary and a blemish on the community of Wilmington…. Bad judgment, Shriners.”
  • “I’m embarrassed that commercial activity in our town could contribute to the national gun violence crisis.”
  • “Wish you didn’t promote this.”
  • “So disgusting. Just a place to skirt safety laws, and five guns to nut jobs.”
  • “Really….this is most definitely not an activity this town should be fostering.”
  • “Disappointed in the Shriners”
  • “Disappointed to read this news and in the Shriners. Guns are designed to end lives. This brings no value to our community.”

Other residents, however, saw no problem with the gun show. Comments included:

  • “The shriners are providing a building for people to exercise their constitutional rights. I am disappointed in people that watch the bias media and let their political affiliations dictate their actions and words. And this goes for both sides of the political aisle.”
  • “This a great thing! Law a binding citizen will be able to go and purchase what they want. This isn’t promoting crime. What most people dont seem to understand is that a criminal doesnt need an event like this to buy guns. They are going to get guns regardless of the laws.”
  • “Thank you for posting an event that will help law abiding citizens exercise their ability to protect their loved ones, property, and community from those who don’t care about laws.”
  • “I’m not a fan of guns, but have no issue with a show. Not going to impact the losers that will get one, illegally, for the wrong reasons. The gun is not the problem. The shooter is.”
