State Rep. Ken Gordon, Community Leaders Show Support for Islamic Center

NOTE: State Rep. Ken Gordon represents Precinct 3 in Wilmington, in addition to all of Burlington and Bedford.

BOSTON, MA – Representative Kenneth I. Gordon (D-Bedford) has contacted members of the Islamic Center of Burlington to offer his support and pass along words of encouragement from other community and interfaith leaders.

“Once again, in my short term in office, someone has spray painted the initials of our great country as graffiti to deface the property of the Islamic Center, in a way that is offensive and marginalizing,” said Gordon. “We in the Burlington community will respond with kindness and respect. We will not be defined by these ignorant acts.”

Gordon has offered to gather a group of community members who are willing to clean and repaint the Center if such a need arises, so that members will understand they are not alone in standing up to hate. He is joined in this sentiment by members of the interfaith council, led by Rabbi Susan Abramson of Congregation Shalom Emeth, and the Burlington Area Chamber of Commerce, which also offered to repair the vandalism done to the Center two years ago.

“We stand shoulder to shoulder with our Muslim brothers and sisters against hate,” said Rabbi Abramson, “There is no room for intolerance and bigotry in our town. This despicable act reminds us we have much work to do to live out the value to love our neighbor as ourselves.”

Burlington Area Chamber of Commerce President Rick Parker was quick to respond. “We at the Chamber stress respect for each other and encourage all others to follow suit.”

Town Meeting member Joanne Frustaci added, “We are a country founded on the principle of religion freedom. There is no place for hate in Burlington.”

Those wishing to join efforts in support of the Center should the need arise may email Rep. Gordon’s office at Kenneth.gordon@mahouse.gov.
