WHS Girls Soccer Ranked As 1 Of The Top 25 Teams IN THE COUNTRY

WILMINGTON, MA – For the first time in school history, the Wilmington High School Girl Varsity Team is nationally ranked.

This week’s USA Today/National Soccer Coaches Association of America’s Super 25 Poll ranks Wilmington as the 23rd best soccer program in the entire country.  Wilmington is ranked 4th in New England and 2nd in Massachusetts.

The Wildcats currently stand at 16-0-1, wrapping up their regular season in a non-league game on the road against Beverly this Saturday.  If the team doesn’t suffer a loss, the team will have gone undefeated in back-to-back regular seasons, after finishing 14-0-4 in 2014.

Coach Sue Hendee tells Wilmington Apple her players have high expectations for their team.

“We were in the state final game two years ago, and it has been a season long goal to get back there again this year,” says Hendee.  “With 11 seniors on the team, this is the year to do it!”

Hendee recognizes, however, that it won’t be easy.

“I believe there will be 6-7 teams from the Middlesex League in the DII North playoffs, so we know that the chances of drawing another Middlesex League team are pretty high,” explains Hendee.  “While we went undefeated in the Middlesex League this year, many of the games were very close.”

Hendee cautions that Concord-Carlisle, Danvers and Marblehead are all very good teams from outside the Middlesex League that will be tough outs for Wilmington.

Tournament brackets will be released on Monday afternoon.  Good luck Wildcats!
