QUESTION OF THE DAY: Miceli Supports Banning Hand-Held Cell Phone Use While Driving. Do You?

In an article (“Hands-free cellphone bill in driver’s seat” by Anna Burgess) published in the Lowell Sun yesterday, State Rep. Jim Miceli threw his support behind a bill that requires hands-free use of cell phones while operating a motor vehicle. (An exception is made when a driver can prove he was using the phone for an emergency.)

Burgess writes, in part:

State Rep. Jim Miceli, D-Wilmington, said having two hands on the wheel is always safer, and prohibiting people from holding phones will also prevent them from looking down while driving.

“I see it in the morning when I’m driving into Boston,” Miceli said. “People are married to their phones, they don’t look away from them at all. I’d vote for this bill, 100 percent.”

Miceli also noted that the proposed law change would allow police to better enforce the no texting laws already on the book.

The bill (H-3315: An Act requiring the hands-free use of mobile telephones while driving), sponsored by Rep. William Strauss, can be read HERE.

Here’s Wilmington Apple’s Question of the Day for October 23: Do you agree with State Rep. Miceli and support a ban on Massachusetts drivers using hand-held cell phones?
