Donald F. Hebsch, “Outstanding Athlete”, 89, of Seabrook, NH and formerly of Wilmington, MA died peacefully surrounded by his family on Thursday, October 1st at Anna Jaques Hospital in Newburyport, MA.
Donald grew up in Methuen, MA and graduated from Edward F. Searles High School, Class of 1945 and he was president of his class. He was inducted into the school’s Hall of Fame for football, baseball, basketball and track. He was the first recipient of the Andy Haldane award for the year’s outstanding athlete. He served in the US Army during WW II. Donald graduated from the University of Vermont. He married his high school sweetheart, Ruth in 1948 and they just celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary on Sept. 18, 2015. He enjoyed wintering in Ft. Meyers Beach, FL for 20 years.
He retired from Dynamics Research in Wilmington, MA and he had previously worked for General Motors in Boston. He was a member of Friendship Masonic Lodge in Wilmington, MA. He was predeceased by his parents; Etta (Small) and George Hebsch and also by his brother Bernard and sister Gladys.
Donald is survived by his beloved wife of 67 years, Ruth (Peglow) Hebsch of Seabrook, NH, his children, Gary Hebsch and wife Ann of Plymouth, MA and Bonnie Hebsch and Ed Leary of Amesbury, MA, 2 grandchildren, Amy and her husband Jose Perez of Chelsea, MA and Kyle Hebsch and his wife Jenni of Plymouth, MA and 2 great grandchildren, Ella and William of Plymouth.
Visitation will be held Thursday, October 15th from 1:00pm to 3:00pm at the Douglas and Johnson Funeral Home, 214 Main St. Salem, NH. The funeral service will follow at 3:00pm in the funeral home.
