The Wilmington Memorial Library recently celebrates Banned Books Week (September 27-October 3) and National Library Card Sign-Up Month (September 1-September 30).
According to the American Library Association, “Banned Books Week is an annual event celebrating the freedom to read. Typically held during the last week of September, it highlights the value of free and open access to information. Banned Books Week brings together the entire book community –- librarians, booksellers, publishers, journalists, teachers, and readers of all types –- in shared support of the freedom to seek and to express ideas, even those some consider unorthodox or unpopular.”
To celebrate, library staff took “mug shots” of teens caught checking out banned books, complete with a placard and a lineup wall. Below are some photos shared on the library’s Facebook page this week.
According to the American Library Association, “September is Library Card Sign-up Month – a time when the American Library Association and libraries across the country remind parents that a library card is the most important school supply of all. The observance was launched in 1987 to meet the challenge of then Secretary of Education William J. Bennett who said: ‘Let’s have a national campaign…every child should obtain a library card – and use it.’ Since then, thousands of public and school libraries join each fall in a national effort to ensure every child does just that.”
To celebrate, library held a month-long raffle where new library cardholders were entered to win a $100 Amazon gift card. The winner, drawn by Library Director Tina Stewart, was youngster Ryan Doherty. Below are some photos shared on the library’s Facebook page this week.
