Wilmington Creates Town IT Department, Already Paying Dividends

WILMINGTON, MA — Kendra Rozett, the town’s new IT Director, met the Board of Selectmen at its meeting on Monday, providing them with an update on her department’s goals and accomplishments to date.

Rozett, who previously served as the IT/Network Administrator at the Wilmington Public Safety Building, discussed the three main goals of her new IT department — (1) improving security; (2) providing end users with a better experience; and (3) planning for the future.

Improving Security. Rozett hopes to standardize equipment — similar hardware, similar brands, similar vendors — which would allow the town to take advantage of economies of scale and receive consistent tech support. Rozett is in the process of evaluating the town’s existing technology practices and policies. She hopes to implement new policies, addressing issues like requiring complex passwords and user access.

Providing End Users With A Better Experience. Rozett has begun making it easier for town employees to get tech support by implementing a ticketing system, which has improved communication between workers and the IT Department. Rozett has provided new tools to IT staff members to enable them to better manage and prioritize their workloads

Planning For The Future. Rozett has begun a detailed inventory that will assist in forecasting future hardware needs. Rozett will also begin carrying warranty supports on all of the town’s various systems. Prior to the creation of the IT Department in July, it had been difficult to plan for future technology needs as it seemed like IT workers were often busy putting out “day-to-day fires.”

“We’ve had some older technology that we’ve been making due with and I don’t want to make due anymore,” said Rozett.

Rozett ran down several of her department’s accomplishments over the past six weeks:

  • implemented a ticketing system
  • completed a comprehensive inventory of desktops and printers on the town-side
  • implemented a modern backup system
  • implemented a remote support system
  • created a new space on the 2nd floor of the Public Buildings headquarters for the IT staff
  • replaced four aging printers and deployed eight workstations
  • upgraded the wi-fi system in the Public Safety Building
  • assisted the Recreation Department in implementing new online registration software

“Kendra [Rozett] has been a star for us,” said Town Manager Jeff Hull, who noted the IT Department will also be responsible for training town employees on various technologies, including Microsoft products and new versions of software.

“I’m thrilled an IT Department is now part of Wilmington’s infrastructure,” remarked Selectwoman Judy O’Connell.
