Below are Wilmington Youth Soccer in-town game summaries from Saturday, September 12.
Boys Grade 1 games:
N.Y. Red Bulls vs. NE Revolution
The Revolution was also impressive on the offensive side of the ball with great skill being displayed by Nate Anderson, Dennis Reppucci and Chase Levesque leading to goals by Jonathan Malley. The defense showcased their skills today with Ari Donn, Daniel Fogg and Chase O’Brien keeping the ball out of their zone for much of the game.
Seattle Sounders FC vs. Columbus Crew
The Columbus Crew’s defensive stand, led by Nolan White and Jack Mahnken, not only struck fear in the Seattle Sounders, but will be feared by future opponents as well. It was this team defense that led to counter attacks by Ethan LaConte and Kyle Price, ultimately leading to goals scored by Cooper Foti. Timely saves by Cooper O’Shea and Max Perez helped strengthen a solid team effort.
DC United vs. Chicago Fire
The first game of the season was a nail bitter. All players left their hearts and sweet out in the field. James Paczkowski wearing the #2 jersey had some incredible goal kicks and played some really good defense. Backing him up was number 7 Xavier Rojas De Los Santos. Xavier won quit a few challenges and cleared the ball extremely well. Number 5 Joe Mytych played the middle of the field like a pro. He was able to run across a couple of opponents and score DC United first goal of the season. Riley Caples sporting the number 4 helped Joe get set up by providing the assist. Riley’s ability to go pass defenders was incredible. Number 3 Jack Cronin helped the team come from a 2 – 1 deficit and even the score right before half time. His quickness allowed him to play both offense and defense. Jackson Griffith, number 6 played a critical role keeping the match close. His ability to go to the ball and steal it from the opponent allowed DC United to stay in the game. Over all the entire team played hard and gave it their all. A big congratulations to everyone!
Girls Grade 1 games:
Portland Thorns vs. Washington Spirit
The WASHINGTON SPIRIT was also impressive on the offensive side of the ball with great skill being displayed by Lilly Abbott, Mikayla Cella, and Maria McCarthy leading to goals by Emma Callahan, Maddie Gryglik, and Sarah Sampson. The defense showcased their skills today with Cara DiGiovanni, Maeve Doherty, and Abbiagael Wiklund keeping the ball out of their zone for much of the game; while the goal keeping team of Mackenzie Scanlon made this game close.
Chicago Red Stars vs. Boston Breakers
Nobody stayed home for this action packed game. The Red Stars’ Anna Heiplik and Emma Tarin scored, getting the crowd jumping out of their seats. Outstanding offense from Bailey O’Connor, Celina Vo and Olivia Martiniello set up many scoring chances. The flawless defense of Angelina Vo and Jenna Giammarco provided great protection for the Red Stars.
FC Kansas City vs. Portland Thorns
The crowds gathered at the Shawsheen fields for an exciting, season opener. FC Kansas City led by Olivia Raposa, Ellie Gillis, Caitlin Hayes and Daniella Madore got the crowd jumping out of their seats. Emma Callahan led the scoring charge, while the great defensive effort of Savannah Beatrice, Hailey Reguera and Lucy Mendoza kept the action going. It was a great start to the season!
Girls Grade 2 games:
Chicago Red Stars vs. Boston Breakers
Proving they were also World Cup Competitors Nicole Gallucci, Alexis LeBlanc, and Summer Sands scored for the Boston Breakers in this hard fought game. Katherine Hughes, Micayla King, and Marina Feeney added the offensive punch and Kaitlyn Shackelford, Leah Murphy, and Sabrina Fitzgerald held up the defense. It was an outstanding team effort capped off with great goal keeping by Samantha Crowley and Madelyn Oatis.
Portland Thorns vs. Washington Spirit
The air was full of excitement, as the much-anticipated match between the Portland Thorns and Washington Spirit commenced. Fantastic ball skills were displayed by Allison Boutoures, Abigail Fennelly and Zoey Helbert resulting in goals by Lindsay Broussard and Charlotte Forcina. The midfield and defensive play of Ava Cirone, Casey Kelley, Sofia Tentindo and Isabella Rogers kept Portland in excellent shape. The crowd roared to their feet when Isabella Zaya and Cayley Israelson made some spectacular saves.
Houston Dash vs. Seattle
The crowds gathered for the season opener at the Shawsheen fields to enjoy this back and forth game. The Dash led by offensive pressure from Cate MacDonald, Krystal Wells and Skylar Nguyen got the crowd jumping out of their seats. Erin McCarthy, Ava Warford and Sophia Cataldi led the scoring charge, while the great defensive effort of Shannon Barrett, Gianna Grieco, Tessa Lebrecque-Pineau and Srilasya Mallajosyula kept the action going all game.
Boys Grade 2 games:
DC United vs. LA Galaxy
The air was full of excitement, as the much-anticipated match between DC United and LA Galaxy commenced. Fantastic ball skill were displayed by Luke Deprofio, Alexander D’Angelo, and Adam Veliz resulting in goals by Luke Kitanov. The midfield and defensive play of John Haggerty, Dylan Grace, Chase Heffernan, and Logan Zimmer kept the HOMETEAM in excellent shape. The crowd roared to their feet when Ethan Afthim, Quinn Stockman, and Brendan Ferrone made some spectacular saves.
