QUESTION OF THE DAY: What Can Wilmington Do To Combat Drug Abuse?

The Wilmington Town Crier reported last week that Wilmington Police responded to 34 overdose calls in 2014 and 35 overdose calls already in 2015. That number does not include Wilmington residents who overdose and wind up in hospitals without the Wilmington Police ever being notified.

Here’s Wilmington Apple’s Question of the Day for September 8: What should Wilmington be doing to combat the drug epidemic plaguing cities and towns across the country? Tewksbury, for example, recently hired a full-time substance abuse prevention director, which is being shared with Chelmsford, Dracut and Lowell. (Learn more HERE.) Gloucester, as another example, has been receiving national attention for allowing drug users to turn in their drugs and paraphernalia with the promise of police filing no criminal charges and then assisting them in getting placed into a treatment facility.

Wilmington, by the way, is holding a Substance Abuse Prevention Month event — a screening of the film “If Only” followed by a panel discussion about heroin addiction — on Wednesday, October 28, 7pm-8:30pm, at St. Thomas. The event is organized by the Wilmington Police Department, Wilmington Board of Health, and St. Thomas.
