Wilmington Town Common Lights Will Turn PINK This October

WILMINGTON, MA — In April, the Town Common lights were turned blue in observance of Autism Awareness Month and Autism Speak’s “Light It Up Blue” campaign.

In May, the Town Common lights were turned purple in recognition of Relay For Life Awareness Month and American Cancer Society’s “Paint The Town Purple” campaign.

This October, the Town Common lights will turn pink for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

The idea came from resident and breast cancer survivor Gigi Shenloogian, whose request was unanimously approved by the Board of Selectmen on Monday night. Shenloogian will be donating the gels (filters) to turn the lights pink.

“It’s another opportunity to really highlight an issue going on for folks that touches so many,” said Assistant Town Manager Kendra Amaral.

“After 5 years [of being in remission], Gigi gave herself a party. After 10 years, she took a trip.  And for 15 years, she’s looking to light up the common,” said Selectwoman Judy O’Connell.  “We wish her well as we do anyone who is winning the battle with breast cancer, as well as any other cancer…  I think this [request] is fantastic and I wholeheartedly support it.”
