Wilmington DPW Updates Town On Five Active Projects

WILMINGTON, MA — Wilmington’s Department of Public Works has recently begun providing progress reports on its website to keep residents better informed.  Last week, the Department posted updates on the following FIVE current projects.

Shawsheen Elementary School Parking Lot Paving

The Department of Public Works will be grinding and resurfacing the existing parking lot at the Shawsheen Elementary School starting Monday August 10, 2015.  The Town’s paving contractor, D&R Construction, Inc., will be performing the work.  The project includes approximately 11,000 SY of asphalt reclamation and grading and approximately 1,700 tons of new asphalt.  It is expected that the project will take approximately 7 days to complete.

Rotary Park/Middlesex Avenue Sidewalk Project

The Department of Public Works has begun a sidewalk extension project on Middlesex Ave. which will create a pedestrian connection between the office park at 21 Middlesex Ave. and Clark Street.  The project also includes an extension of the existing stone dust pathways at Rotary Park, connecting them with the new sidewalk network on Middlesex Ave.  This project, which went before the Wilmington Conservation Commission through a Request for Determination of Applicability (RDA) submission, also includes drainage upgrades which are designed to better treat and detain stormwater runoff from Middlesex Ave. in the vicinity of the project.

Butters Row Culvert Replacement

The Department of Public Works has contracted the services of Cardillo & Sons, Inc. of Wakefield, MA to replace the existing 30-inch concrete and corrugated metal culvert underneath Butters Row, between Factory Road and the Butters Row Bridge.  The existing culvert is approximately 15-feet below grade.  This project, which received an Order of Conditions from the Conservation Commission, seeks to improve drainage backups along the north side of Butters Row, and help alleviate ponding along the railroad bed under the bridge.  Butters Row is planned to be closed for an estimated 10 to 14 days starting Monday August 3rd, 2015.  The closure will occur at Chestnut Street and Main Street, allowing only local traffic to access the area, with a hard closure at the bridge area.  It is expected that the project will be completed by mid-August.

Cunningham Street Drainage Project

Department of Public Works personnel have begun a new drainage project on Cunningham Street. A capital improvement item in the FY16 budget, the project includes the installation of approximately 366 ft of new RCP drainage pipe, 5 new catch basins, 3 new drain manholes, infiltration units, and a detention pond along with other drainage appurtenances.

Water Main Upgrade For Dexter Street & Silverhurst Avenue

Water Department personnel have completed installing the new water main on Dexter Street/Silverhurst Avenue from Main Street to Lake Street. In addition to laying the water main, new fire hydrants were also added to the area. Upon passing the pressure and bacteria test, Water Department personnel will begin connecting houses to the new  8″ water main. Residents will be notified of any water disruptions that may occur.
