YOUR Voice Is Needed: Wilmington To Lose $133,000 In State Funding For Kindergarten Program

WILMINGTON, MA — School Committee M.J. Byrnes, the Committee’s Legislative Representative, is encouraging residents to contact Wilmington’s State House delegation to support an override of Governor Baker’s $17.6 million veto of funding for full-day kindergarten, known as “Kindergarten Expansion Grants.”  (Account #7030-1002)

“I urge all community residents to write and call our representatives: Senator Bruce Tarr, Rep. Jim Miceli, and Rep. Ken Gordon to ask them to support an ‘override’ to the Governor’s vetoes, to bring back funding to this vital line item that supports our kindergarten programming!!! Thank you in advance!,” Byrnes wrote on her public Facebook page earlier this week.

According to Byrnes, Wilmington will lose $133,000 as a result of Baker’s veto.

“This veto also creates a significant shortfall of over $130 thousand dollars to Wilmington Public Schools FY16 budget. This unexpected funding shortage will not only threaten the progress we’ve made thus far towards student learning, but will also compromise and delay the addition of new and necessary programming throughout our schools, that supports what we’ve started. This is a great disservice to our staff, and more importantly, our students,” Byrnes wrote in the letter she sent to Miceli, Byrnes, and Tarr.  Read the full letter HERE.
