SALEM, MA — Salem Five capped off its Heart League contest, which recognized nine local people for putting “heart” into everything they do, by surprising the honorees on July 11 with a trolley tour of the city conducted by baseball fan favorite Dustin Pedroia.
The bank invited the Heart League members, who were selected by 98.5 The Sports Hub’s Rich Shertenlieb and MIX 104.1’s Kennedy Elsey, and the people who nominated them, to its downtown Boston location at 52 Congress St., for a special brunch with the radio personalities, surprising them when Pedroia arrived on a trolley to take the group on a tour of Boston. The trolley stopped at locations around the city, stunning fans who were able to meet Pedroia, take selfies or share their excitement on social media. The event ended in a special VIP tour experience at Fenway Park.
The Heart League contest kicked off on March 28. Winners received autographed Pedroia gear, game tickets and had their stories promoted on air, in addition to participating in the July 11 event.
The Heart League inductees included Andrew Baker, of Wilmington, Andrew Biggio, of Winthrop, Emily Collins, of Concord, Darlene Costos, of Chelmsford, Darryl Goodridge, of Somerville, Betsy Holbrook, of Salem, Muji Karim, of Somerville, Dave LaFreniere, of West Falmouth, and Rory Torstensson, of Marblehead
The contest was part of a multimedia campaign, built on Salem Five’s seven-year relationship with Boston Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia, that focused on shared attributes of Pedroia and the bank — staying true to your values, giving it your best shot and doing everything with heart.
“The surprise trolley tour with Dustin was a great opportunity to reward and honor this team of nine individuals for the meaningful work that they do to improve the lives of others, as well as to share the excitement with people throughout Boston,” said Martha Acworth, chief marketing officer of Salem Five. “We believe, just as Dustin does, in putting heart into everything we do and the nine Heart League inductees are perfect examples of that.”
Pedroia’s relationship with Salem Five dates back to 2008. He serves as spokesperson for the bank’s award-winning Gold Star Saver program for children, which inspires financial literacy and responsibility. He has participated in numerous Salem Five community events for both children and adults over the years.
