Wilmington’s Public Library Is Hiring

Assistant Librarian For Teen Services
Unit: AFSCME II, S-5
Reporting To: Library Director or designee
Wages: $798.59/week to $1,010.59/week
Hours: 35 hours per week, one evening per week and every third Saturday rotating shift required

Definition

Paraprofessional librarian position responsible for work related to the development and delivery of library services to teens and all other related work as required.

Essential Functions

Working under the general supervision of the Children’s Librarian:

  • Create a welcoming environment in the Library which provides for enjoyable, enriching, and convenient use of library resources for teens.
  • Assist in the planning and implementation of engaging programs generally for the sixth grade through high school age group, may plan and present programs for children fifth grade and younger.
  • Assist with general library duties including circulation, registering patrons for library programs, museum passes, etc.
  • Plan and present programs, book performers and skilled resource providers to present specialized programs for teens; collaborate with teachers, school librarians, and other agencies providing services for teens.
  • Perform reference and reader’s advisory services generally for teens, parents, caregivers, and teachers.
  • Provide assistance to teens and parents in the use of computers and technology.
  • Develop lists and guides to books and other library resources.
  • Participate in collection development activities including book selection and weeding.
  • Create thematic and seasonal book displays.
  • Assume responsibility for the Children’s Room in the absence of the Children’s Librarian.
  • Supervise library associates, library pages and volunteers in the absence of the Children’s Librarian.
  • Demonstrate continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.
  • Assist in other departments as needed.
  • Perform other similar tasks or related works as assigned by the Library Director, Assistant Library Director, or Children’s Librarian.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 2 years of library experience; or a combination of relevant education and experience.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of professional library work including collection development and planning programs and services for teens.
  • Knowledge of computer applications and current technologies.
  • Experience in developing and presenting programs for teens.
  • Ability to work with children both individually and in groups.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with others, orally and in writing.
  • Ability to set priorities and complete projects independently and as a member of a team.

Job Environment

Work is generally performed inside a building. Work environment is characteristic of an office environment, with even walking surfaces and generally low noise levels. Noise levels may be elevated during certain programs or performances that may be scheduled in the building.

Physical Requirements

The work is generally of an intellectual nature. While performing the functions of this job, the employee is required to stand and sit for prolonged periods. Frequently required use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects; reaches with hands and arms, bends, stoops, kneels, and/or crouches. Specific vision abilities required include close and medium distance vision and the ability to adjust focus. Must be able to hear normal sounds, distinguish sound as voice and communicate through human speech. Required to lift and carry equipment and supplies weighing up to 50 pounds, and push a cart which at full load may be up to 300 pounds. This position requires the ability to operate a keyboard, computer mouse, telephone, fax, copier, writing tools, scissors, and other standard office equipment.
