Melvin Norton, age 92, of Wilmington, MA, formerly of Waltham, passed from this life to the next on June 29, 2015.
Loving and devoted husband of Jeannette (Bowman) Norton. He is survived by his children: Richard Norton and his wife, Karen, of St. Augustine, FL, Gary Norton and his wife, Judy, of Port Orange, FL, Janice Jordan and her husband, Chuck, of Wilmington, Ken Norton of Ecuador and Brian Norton of Wilmington. He also was the loving Grampy to eight grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.
Melvin and Jeannette grew up together in Waltham and married on June 28, 1947. He served his country proudly in WW ll and continued to serve in the US Army Reserves, retiring as a Lt. Colonel, after having served a total of 30 years. Until his retirement, Mel owned his own painting contracting business and painted many well-known buildings in the area, including the Colonial Hilton.
In his life he enjoyed playing the violin, hunting, fishing, art and was an avid Red Sox fan. In later years, he and Jeannette traveled quite extensively to places like England, Denmark, Germany, many of the states, including Hawaii and Alaska, and also enjoyed taking cruises. He will be dearly remembered as a man who loved his wife dearly, always worked hard to provide for his family and set the example of sacrificial love and concern for others, whose needs always came first. He was the true anchor of our family.
Visiting hours will be at the Nichols Funeral Home, 187 Middlesex Ave. (Rt 62), Wilmington, on Thursday, July 2, 2015 between 4 – 8 PM. A funeral home service will be conducted at the same location on Friday, July 3rd, beginning at 10:30 AM. Interment with military honors to follow in Wildwood Cemetery. All are invited to come pay their respects and celebrate Melvin’s life with his family and friends.
