The Wilmington Wildcat GU14-5 soccer team recently competed in the Middlesex Youth Soccer League Commissioners Cup on June 20 and June 21st.
The Wilmington ladies finished their regular season as DIVISION CHAMPIONS and with the combined talents of Keeper DELANEY DIAZ and the Defensive line of HEATHER BECK, REBECCA GANLEY, AMIE RUSSELL, ALANAH COLANTUONI and NICOLE KRUGER, this talented group of players allowed only 3 goals in 8 regular season games……this record put them in SECOND PLACE for fewest goals allowed out of 63 teams in Middlesex soccer.
The Girls were playing their last games together as a team as they are moving on to High school so they wanted to end their youth soccer experience on a high note.
Game #1 was played on Saturday June 20th and the ladies were facing an undefeated 8-0 Westford team, Forward SAMMI FUSCO (GOAL @ 21’) put the Wilmington girls ahead 1-0 after MEGHAN CANALE (ASSIST) sent a leading pass and SAMMI sent a rocket into the Westford net. Westford tied the game later with a goal and it was tied 1-1 but late in the second half with 5 minutes remaining a Penalty kick against Westford was called and the most selfless act of sportsmanship and teamwork was witnessed….SAMMI FUSCO was chosen to take the kick but she deferred to her teammate KATHERINE WEYMOUTH and KAT send an absolute screaming kick and the Westford keeper couldn’t stop it and Wilmington took a 2-1 lead and ultimately won the game.
Game # 2 was played Sunday morning in a downpour against Burlington and once again KATHERINE WEYMOUTH scored (GOAL @ 18’)after ALAINA DESANTIS (Assist) sent her a great crossing pass and Wilmington took game 2 WITH A 1-0 WIN and they were poised to win the cup.
Game # 3 was played against Stoneham later on Sunday and the sun made it hot and humid but the girls were determined to finish with a W and they went out with a bang. The Midfielders, SAMMI MARZI, KYLIE FLANAGAN, KIKI BARNUM and NATALIE FOX combined to shut down the Stoneham offense leading Wilmington to a 0-0 tie .
The Wilmington GU14-5 soccer team was crowned 2015 COMMISIONERS CUP CHAMPIONS at a ceremony Sunday afternoon. The girls played with heart, sportsmanship, fair play and a genuine care for their teammates….as one parent commented “This is not a team, we are a family”
