WILMINGTON, MA — This past weekend, Wilmington’s Relay for Life added over $73,000 to establish a grand total of $894,000 raised by this 7-year old successful community event. Keeping up with the latest trends, the Relay committee added several new and exciting features this year.
Three food trucks made the June 19th Friday night scene — Boston Burger Company, The Snowie Bus, and the Mix 104.1 van featuring free Turkey Hill ice cream.
Boston Burger Company is the city’s own Triple Crown of Burgers. They won Rachel Ray’s Battle of the Burger when they appeared on her show. Guy Fieri featured them on Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives. And Boston magazine recently named them Boston’s best burger.
People of all ages lined up for the Snowie Bus by Busy Bee Jumpers of Whitman, MA. They purchased a snow cone, and then added and mixed their own flavors from the bus syrup taps. Everything from Wild Cherry and Watermelon to Cotton Candy and Peach were available.
Boston’s Best Variety Mix 104.1 radio rounded out the food truck trio nicely. Station staff shared their energy with the crowd as they served free Turkey Hill ice cream from the colorful 104.1 van.
Fitness instructor Chanel Garcia also supplied a special treat of Zumba Love when she led the crowd through a Zumba dance class. Movies, games, a pizza party and much more kept the festivities going throughout the night.
The event still included the traditional ceremonies which celebrate, remember and fight back against cancer. Survivors were honored during the Opening Ceremony and then they kicked off the evening with their always powerful survivor lap. Later under the dark of night, the poignant moments of the Luminaria Ceremony helped people to remember their loved ones now gone and to share comfort.
Lastly the Fight Back Ceremony included a special message of recognition and thanks to those who have made the Wilmington fight such a success. The Barry Family, Bertucci’s Restaurant, Boy Scouts of America Troop 56, Concord Teacakes, Designs By Don, Dunkin Donuts 195 and 321 Main Street, Market Basket, Ninety Nines Restaurant, Rocco’s and the Depasquale Family, Two Cousins Karaoke and DJ’s, the Town of Wilmington, Wilmington Dance Academy, and WCTV were all recognized as sponsors who have participated every year since the event’s inception.
In addition, the Town Crier received the first ever Spirit of Relay Award for their sustained superior support in advertising throughout the area. Jayne Miller accepted the award on behalf of the entire staff.
