Wilmington Youth Lacrosse canceled some of the home games this weekend due to flooding on the field.  Those teams that were able to get their games in on Sunday really battled the elements and fought hard!

Boys U9 White

The Boys U9 White team braved the elements on Sunday, battling the biting winds, torrential rain, and a tough opponent in Charlestown.  With an away game and uncertain weather conditions, the Wildcats came out of the gate in slow motion.  With the unseasonable cold weather, the team got a late start firing on all cylinders, trailing 2-0 early.   With a last minute goal keeper adjustment, Jack Martins admirably filled in, played well, and kept the Charlestown attack at a limited two goal deficit.

In the second half, the clouds opened up, and the Wildcats turned a corner.  With a bench getting shorter due to weather conditions and illness – Shane O’Neill, Matt Breen, and Jack Martins pulled double shifts to move upfield, tying the game at 2-2.  Cameron Splaine and Jake Banda were all over the field intercepting passes and shooting on the net.  Chase Heffernan manned the goal throughout the second half, making heart stopping saves, exciting the fans, and keeping the score tied late in the game.  The relentless Charlestown barrage was too much for Heffernan, unable to make the final save, losing the game 3-2.  Nathan Caples, Matt Newhouse, Owen Fitzpatrick and Jon Mehr provided stellar defense, limiting interior shots and proving outlet passes to middies Zack Timmons, Camden Gray, Ryan Lavorato, Stephen Constantine and Braeddon Dyment throughout the second half.

The final regular season game is at Woburn Street on Sunday June 7th vs Billerica

Boys U15 Select

Last Saturday, the U15 Select team took on a very good Lynnfield squad and came away with a hard-fought 7-6 victory.  Wilmington evened the score 3-3 just before halftime on an unassisted goal from Pat Modoono.  Andrew Sullivan had opened the scoring on an assist from Jake Timmons and Zack Kincaid was the other first half scorer (assisted by Sullivan).  In the third quarter, Lynnfield took a 6-4 lead. Ben Wright deposited a goal on a great feed from Shane Ahlin in that stanza.

In the fourth quarter, Wilmington really took over the game.  They substituted quickly and ran Lynnfield off of the field.  Joey Theriault scored a goal to bring the score to 6-5.  Several minutes later, Kincaid got the equalizer, with Sullivan getting another assist.  Lynnfield was then called for a penalty with 1:10 left in the game.  After a timeout, Wilmington’s dominant man-up unit of Sullivan, Kincaid, Theriault, Ahlin, Connor Benoit and Ryan Martin were put on the field and they responded after Sullivan ripped the twine off of a rebound to give the Wildcats the victory with 0:34 left in the contest.

Defensively, the Wildcats were lead by the quartet of Josh Smith, Tyler Wood, Camden Kenyon and Kyle Kenyon.  The Kenyon brothers were particularly stout during crunch time in the 4th quarter as they didn’t allow any quality Lynnfield shots on goalie Jimmy Theriault, who was up to the task on Saturday.
