On Tuesday, May 26, 75 residents attended a very special program at the Wilmington Memorial Library.
As the library noted in a press release, members of the Colonel Charles McGee Chapter of the Tuskegee Airmen from Hanscom Air Force Base discusses the history of the Tuskegee Airmen. They were the first black servicemen to be military aviators in the U.S. armed forces, flying with distinction during World War II. African Americans were barred from flying for the U.S. military prior to 1940. The highly publicized successes of the Tuskegee Airmen helped pave the way for the eventual integration of the U.S. armed forces under President Harry Truman in 1948.
