WILMINGTON, MA — After years of inaction from the Massachusetts Department of Transportation, the long-awaited intersection project at Middlesex Avenue, Glen Road and Wildwood Street will begin on Wednesday, June 10.
“Traffic lights, sidewalks and minor modifications to the intersections themselves, as well as to the water main and stormwater systems will be addressed,” wrote Director of Public Works Michael Woods in a memo shared with the Board of Selectmen at Tuesday night’s meeting.
“This important project is intended to improve vehicular and pedestrian safety and overall traffic operations each intersection,” noted Woods.
MDR Construction Company, the company awarded the bid by the state, has met with the Town to discuss the project’s initial logistics.
- Traffic light boards have been placed near the intersections this week warning motorists of the pending project.
- On June 10, test pits will be dug to ascertain soil conditions and location of existing utilities.
- 3 weeks will then be taken to replace an existing 10-inch cast iron water main with a 12-inch ductile pipe.
- Another 3 weeks will be taken for stormwater drainage construction.
All work is scheduled to take place between 7am and 3pm, Monday through Friday, unless otherwise approved by the Town and Mass DOT.
The Department of Public Works has already notified abutters to the project, along with the school department. Dust control will be implemented each day.
“The Town of Wilmington’s DPW… will work with all involved to minimize the disruption to abutters and residents in this very difficult project location,” assured Woods.
The completion date for the overall project is October 2016.
