WILMINGTON, MA — Following a meeting between the Murphy family and Wilmington school administrators, a mutual understanding has been reached regarding Michael Murphy’s attendance and participation in Wilmington High School’s commencement ceremony on Sunday, June 7, 2015. Several weeks ago, the Murphy family and Michael were invited by Principal Linda Peters to attend graduation as a guest of the Class of 2015 – the class that Michael would have graduated with absent the tragic event that occurred on June 18, 2011. Administrators had anticipated that Michael would attend and be recognized in a meaningful way. However, the specific details of how that would happen had not yet been clarified for the Murphy family. After thoughtful dialogue between the family and administration, the family now understands and accepts what Wilmington High School administrators are planning. The family expressed their appreciation for the meeting and the resolution of the matter.
Due to constraints imposed upon Wilmington Public Schools by state and federal laws and regulations pertaining to student records and privacy, the district is unable to issue any further comment or respond publicly to any inquiries regarding the specifics of this situation to members of the press or other third parties. Both parties ask that the press respect the privacy of all and refrain from inquiry into specifics so as not to diminish from the planned events of the day.
